美国加州南湾华人协会腰鼓队精彩亮相南加高校联盟《联盟杯》乒乓球友谊赛开幕式 The Waist Drum Team of the South Bay Chinese American Association Makes a Spectacular Appearance at the Opening Ceremony of the Southern California University Alumni Alliance "Alliance Cup" Table Tennis Tournament
【South Bay Chinese American Association – June 28, 2026】 On June 28, 2026, the "Alliance Cup" Table Tennis Tournament, hosted by the Table Tennis Club of the Southern California University Alumni Alliance, was grandly held in Los Angeles. Representatives from over twenty university alumni organizations—including those from Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Jiaotong University, and Tianjin University—as well as community groups, gathered to forge friendships through sport and strengthen bonds, jointly writing a new chapter in sports exchange and community camaraderie.
At the invitation of the organizers, the Waist Drum Team of the South Bay Chinese American Association made a spectacular appearance at the opening ceremony, performing the classic piece "On the Fields of Hope." Led by Captain Huang Sui and Deputy Captain Gu Yu, the team members—full of energy, with resounding drumbeats and synchronized movements—showcased the unique charm of the traditional Chinese waist drum art form. Their performance brought the atmosphere of the opening ceremony to a climax, earning enthusiastic applause and unanimous praise from the audience. Many spectators expressed a deep sense of connection while enjoying such a wonderful performance of traditional Chinese culture, noting how it vividly demonstrated the cohesive power and inspiring influence of Chinese culture within the community.
The South Bay Chinese American Association attached great importance to this event. Honorary Chair Professor Lin Lianlian, Chair Professor Ma Shengxing, Vice President Catherine Li, and Advisor Lisa Lian were invited to attend the event and participate in the awards ceremony. They highly commended the University Alumni Alliance for its long-standing contributions to promoting sports and cultural exchanges, uniting alumni, and serving the community, and they wished the "Alliance Cup" a complete success. Association Advisor Xiyan Li and Board Members May Chan and Xinyan Zhou were present to support and cheer on the team members. August Adam, a board member of the Association's Youth Center, served as the accompanying reporter, covering the event and capturing its highlights, thereby showcasing the spirit of youth volunteers actively participating in community service. On the court, the sixteen participating teams competed with great spirit, delivering a spectacular performance; off the court, participants exchanged ideas, shared skills, and deepened friendships, fully embodying the sportsmanship of "friendship first, competition second" and showcasing the unity, mutual assistance, and harmonious atmosphere of the Southern California Chinese community.
The South Bay Chinese American Association (SBCAA) has long actively participated in and supported various public service, cultural, and sports events organized by fellow associations. Through concrete actions, it promotes the sharing of community resources, strengthens inter-association cooperation, fosters friendship, and serves the community collectively. The Association believes that sports not only improve physical health but also transcend boundaries of alumni affiliation, geography, and industry, serving as a vital bond that unites the Chinese community and facilitates communication.
It is worth noting that the SBCAA has maintained a strong partnership with the Southern California Chinese Universities Alumni Association Alliance (SCCUAAA). In 2023, the Association participated in the 2nd "Alliance Cup" Team Table Tennis Invitational; its team competed fiercely against a field of elite players to win the Group B championship, while its cheerleading squad took second place in the opening ceremony competition. That same year, the Association sponsored and supported the Alliance’s 21st "Pine-Bamboo-Plum" (Song-Zhu-Mei) Picnic—a gathering of over a thousand people—actively organizing athletes to compete in fun sports games and aerobics competitions, where they won awards. They also participated in events such as the "Artistic Splendor" (Yi Cai Hua Zhang) performance, which marked the closing of the Alliance’s Art Season. In 2024, the Association once again participated in the 22nd "Pine-Bamboo-Plum" Picnic, successfully retaining the "Most Popular Award" in the aerobics competition. Additionally, the waist-drum team received an "Excellent Award" for their spectacular performance during the opening ceremony, with the Association’s President and Vice President accepting the trophy on the team's behalf.
For years, the South Bay Chinese American Association has steadfastly upheld the principles of "unity, service, dedication, and mutual success." It actively supports fellow associations in organizing cultural, sports, and public service events, continuously strengthens inter-community communication and cooperation, and works hand-in-hand to create a supportive, resource-sharing, united, and friendly community environment. Moving forward, the Association will continue to serve as a bridge, joining hands with more community organizations to promote the dissemination of excellent Chinese culture and foster sports exchanges, thereby contributing to the creation of a more united, harmonious, and thriving Chinese community.
